Reaping more value from more innovations.

i4e Patent Portfolios, called Patent Arrays
As many inventors already know, successfully achieving financial rewards from licensing technology is a numbers game.  Roughly 3% of patents ever see truly outstanding licensing results.  In our experience, there are another 20-30% of patents that lie underutilized, but alone cannot support marketing and licensing efforts.  Our question was simple – how can this value be unlocked?

Our answer, Patent Arrays
A Patent Array is a technology-focused patent and patent application portfolio available for licensing across the market.  Submitting a patent, using our Patent Brokering Services, or idea, using our IdeaServiceTM, to be included in a Patent Array allows you to see it marketed and licensed with a number of other technology related ideas and patents.  Your patent gets individualized attention while efficiently providing a variety of technologies to licensees.

Patent licensing tracked to each invention
Each license is for one or more specific patents to be used on specific products and licensees are not provided a license to all patents in the Patent Array (e.g.  they license what they need).  We administer the patent royalty license process, report Licensing Revenues for all the patents or applications in our system and then ensure you and any other inventors you work with get paid.  i4e handles this work so you can focus on applying your knowledge and inventing more.

Revenue Sharing
We asked a lot of questions about why patent holders would want to participate in a Patent Array or larger portfolio if only a small number of patents really hold value.  Specifically,
  • What is the added value of having a large, licensable patent portfolio?
  • How am I rewarded if my patent is the best in the Patent Array?

We feel, and our research with inventors indicated, the most equitable, least arbitrary way to compensate patent holders for participation is to reward involvement patent-by-patent yet also provide a mechanism to reward all.   As a result, we calculate 10% of Net Revenue and distribute it evenly to each patent and patent application held in a Patent Array (want to see an example?).   The remaining 90% of Net Revenues is paid directly to the patents that generated the license.  As a result, the most successful patents see large rewards while other technologies receive benefits for adding scale, variety, and value to each patent in the Array and to the Array as a whole.
